Dalam dunia website/weblog sekarang ini, khususnya bagi para publisher dan blogger diperlukan pengetahuan tentang Search Engine Optimization, website/weblog yang telah sobat buat tugas selanjutnya adalah mendaftarkan website/weblog sobat ke mesin pencari Google atau yang lainnya. Sebelum mendaftarkan website/weblog yang telah dibuat; sekarang yang menjadi pertanyaan apa itu search engine optimization, cara kerja dan fungsi suatu search engine.

1. Pengertian Search Engine
Mesin pencari web atau yang lebih dikenal dengan istilah web search engine merupakan program komputer yang dirancang untuk mencari informasi yang tersedia didalam dunia maya. Berbeda halnya dengan direktori web (seperti dmoz.org) yang dikerjakan oleh manusia untuk mengelompokkan suatu halaman informasi berdasarkan kriteria yang ada, web search engine mengumpulkan informasi yang tersedia secara otomatis.

2. Cara Kerja Search Engine
Mesin pencari web bekerja dengan cara menyimpan hampir semua informasi halaman web, yang diambil langsung dari www. Halaman-halaman ini diambil secara otomatis. Isi setiap halaman lalu dianalisis untuk menentukan cara mengindeksnya (misalnya, kata-kata diambil dari judul, subjudul, atau field khusus yang disebut meta tag). Data
tentang halaman web disimpan dalam sebuah database indeks untuk digunakan dalam pencarian selanjutnya. Sebagian mesin pencari, seperti Google, menyimpan seluruh atau sebagian halaman sumber (yang disebut cache) maupun informasi tentang halaman web itu sendiri.

Ketika seorang pengguna mengunjungi mesin pencari dan memasukkan query, biasanya dengan memasukkan kata kunci, mesin mencari indeks dan memberikan daftar halaman web yang paling sesuai dengan kriterianya, biasanya disertai ringkasan singkat mengenai judul dokumen dan terkadang sebagian teksnya.

Mesin pencari lain yang menggunakan proses real-time, seperti Orase, tidak menggunakan indeks dalam cara kerjanya. Informasi yang diperlukan mesin tersebut hanya dikumpulkan jika ada pencarian baru. Jika dibandingkan dengan sistem berbasis indeks yang digunakan mesin-mesin seperti Google, sistem real-time ini unggul dalam beberapa hal seperti informasi selalu mutakhir, (hampir) tak ada broken link, dan lebih sedikit sumberdaya sistem yang diperlukan (Google menggunakan hampir 100.000 komputer, Orase hanya satu.). Tetapi, ada juga kelemahannya yaitu pencarian lebih lama rampungnya.

3. Komponen utama dalam Search Engine
Sebuah search engine memiliki beberapa komponen agar dapat menyediakan layanan utamanya sebagai sebuah mesin pencari informasi. Komponen tersebut antara lain :

1. Web Crawler
Web crawler atau yang dikenal juga dengan istilah web spider bertugas untuk mengumpulkan semua informasi yang ada di dalam halaman web. Web crawler bekerja secara otomatis dengan cara memberikan sejumlah alamat website untuk dikunjungi serta menyimpan semua informasi yang terkandung didalamnya. Setiap kali web crawler mengunjungi sebuah website, maka dia akan mendata semua link yang ada dihalaman yang dikunjunginya itu untuk kemudian di kunjungi lagi satu persatu.

Proses web crawler dalam mengunjungi setiap dokumen web disebut dengan web crawling atau spidering. Beberapa websites, khususnya yang berhubungan dengan pencarian menggunakan proses spidering untuk memperbaharui data data mereka. Web crawler biasa digunakan untuk membuat salinan secara sebhagian atau keseluruhan halaman web yang telah dikunjunginya agar dapat dip roses lebih lanjut oleh system pengindexan. Crawler dapat juga digunakan untuk proses pemeliharaan sebuah website, seperti memvalidasi kode html sebuah web, dan crawler juga digunakan untuk memperoleh data yang khusus seperti mengumpulkan alamat e-mail.

Web crawler termasuk kedalam bagian software agent atau yang lebih dikenal dengan istilah program bot. Secara umum crawler memulai prosesnya dengan memberikan daftar sejumlah alamat website untuk dikunjungi, disebut sebagai seeds. Setiap kali sebuah halaman web dikunjungi, crawler akan mencari alamat yang lain yang terdapat didalamnya dan menambahkan kedalam daftar seeds sebelumnya.

Dalam melakukan prosesnya, web crawler juga mempunyai beberapa persoalan yang harus mampu di atasinya. Permasalahan tersebut mencakup :

* Halaman mana yang harus dikunjungi terlebih dahulu.
* Aturan dalam proses mengunjungi kembali sebuah halaman.
* Performansi, mencakup banyaknya halaman yang harus dikunjungi.
* Aturan dalam setiap kunjungan agar server yang dikunjungi tidak kelebihan beban.
* Kegagalan, mencakup tidak tersedianya halaman yang dikunjungi, server down, timeout, maupun jebakan yang sengaja dibuat oleh webmaster.
* Seberapa jauh kedalaman sebuah website yang akan dikunjungi.
* Hal yang tak kalah pentingnya adalah kemampuan web crawler untuk mengikuti
perkembangan teknologi web, dimana setiap kali teknologi baru muncul, web crawler harus dapat menyesuaikan diri agar dapat mengunjungi halaman web yang menggunakan teknologi baru tersebut.

Proses sebuah web crawler untuk mendata link – link yang terdapat didalam sebuah halaman web menggunakan pendekatan regular expression. Crawler akan menelurusi setiap karakter yang ada untuk menemukan hyperlink tag html (). Setiap hyperlink tag yang ditemukan diperiksa lebih lanjut apakah tag tersebut mengandung atribut nofollow rel, jika tidak ada maka diambil nilai yang terdapat didalam attribute href yang merupakan sebuah link baru.

2. Indexing system
Indexing system bertugas untuk menganalisa halaman web yang telah tersimpan sebelumnya dengan cara mengindeks setiap kemungkinan term yang terdapat di dalamnnya. Data term yang ditemukan disimpan dalam sebuah database indeks untuk digunakan dalam pencarian selanjutnya.

Indexing system mengumpulkan, memilah dan menyimpan data untuk memberikan kemudahan dalam pengaksesan informasi secara tepat dan akurat. Proses pengolahan halaman web agar dapat digunakan untuk proses pencarian berikutnya dinakamakan web indexing. Dalam implementasinya index system dirancang dari penggabungan beberapa cabang ilmu antara lain ilmu bahasa, psikologi, matematika, informatika, fisika, dan ilmu komputer.

Tujuan dari penyimpanan data berupa indeks adalah untuk performansi dan kecepatan dalam menemukan informasi yang relevan berdasarkan inputan user. Tanpa adanya indeks, search engine harus melakukan scan terhadap setiap dokumen yang ada didalam database. Hal ini tentu saja akan membutuhkan proses sumber daya yang sangat besar dalam proses komputasi. Sebagai contoh, indeks dari 10.000 dokumen dapat diproses dalam waktu beberapa detik saja, sedangkan penulusuran secara berurutan setiap kata yang terdapat di dalam 10.000 dokumen akan membutuhkan waktu yang berjam lamanya. Tempat tambahan mungkin akan dibutuhkan di dalam computer untuk penyimpanan indeks, tapi hal ini akan terbayar dengan penghematan waktu pada saat pemrosesan pencarian dokumen yang dibutuhkan.

3. Search system
Search system inilah yang berhubungan langsung dengan pengguna, meyediakan hasil pencarian informasi yang diinginkan. Ketika seorang pengguna mengunjungi mesin pencari dan memasukkan kata pencarian biasanya dengan beberapa kata kunci, search system akan mencari data dari indeks database, data yang cocok kemudian akan ditampilkan, biasanya disertai ringkasan singkat mengenai judul dokumen dan terkadang sebagian teksnya

Internet merupakan jaringan komputer yang dibentuk oleh Departemen Pertahanan Amerika Serikat di tahun 1969, melalui proyek ARPA yang disebut ARPANET (Advanced Research Project Agency Network), di mana mereka mendemonstrasikan bagaimana dengan hardware dan software komputer yang berbasis UNIX, kita bisa melakukan komunikasi dalam jarak yang tidak terhingga melalui saluran telepon. Proyek ARPANET merancang bentuk jaringan, kehandalan, seberapa besar informasi dapat dipindahkan, dan akhirnya semua standar yang mereka tentukan menjadi cikal bakal pembangunan protokol baru yang sekarang dikenal sebagai TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol).
Tujuan awal dibangunnya proyek itu adalah untuk keperluan militer. Pada saat itu Departemen Pertahanan Amerika Serikat (US Department of Defense) membuat sistem jaringan komputer yang tersebar dengan menghubungkan komputer di daerah-daerah vital untuk mengatasi masalah bila terjadi serangan nuklir dan untuk menghindari terjadinya informasi terpusat, yang apabila terjadi perang dapat mudah dihancurkan.
Pada mulanya ARPANET hanya menghubungkan 4 situs saja yaitu Stanford Research Institute, University of California, Santa Barbara, University of Utah, di mana mereka membentuk satu jaringan terpadu di tahun 1969, dan secara umum ARPANET diperkenalkan pada bulan Oktober 1972. Tidak lama kemudian proyek ini berkembang pesat di seluruh daerah, dan semua universitas di negara tersebut ingin bergabung, sehingga membuat ARPANET kesulitan untuk mengaturnya.
Oleh sebab itu ARPANET dipecah manjadi dua, yaitu "MILNET" untuk keperluan militer dan "ARPANET" baru yang lebih kecil untuk keperluan non-militer seperti, universitas-universitas. Sebagai buntut dari "kekalahan" Amerika Serikat dalam meluncurkan wahana luar angkasa, dibentuklah sebuah badan di dalam Departemen Pertahanan Amerika Serikat, Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA), yang bertujuan agar Amerika Serikat mampu meningkatkan ilmu pengetahuan dan teknologi negara tersebut. J.C.R. Licklider menulis sebuah tulisan mengenai sebuah visi di mana komputer-komputer dapat saling dihubungkan antara satu dengan lainnya secara global agar setiap komputer tersebut mampu menawarkan akses terhadap program dan juga data. Di tahun ini juga RAND Corporation memulai riset terhadap ide ini (jaringan komputer terdistribusi), yang ditujukan untuk tujuan militer.
Awal 1960-an Teori mengenai packet-switching dapat diimplementasikan dalam dunia nyata.

Pertengahan 1960-an ARPA mengembangkan ARPANET untuk mempromosikan "Cooperative Networking of Time-sharing Computers", dengan hanya empat buah host komputer yang dapat dihubungkan hingga tahun 1969, yakni Stanford Research Institute, University of California, Los Angeles, University of California, Santa Barbara, dan University of Utah.

Awal 1980-an Komputer pribadi (PC) mewabah, dan menjadi bagian dari banyak hidup manusia.
Tahun ini tercatat ARPANET telah memiliki anggota hingga 213 host yang terhubung.
Layanan BITNET (Because It's Time Network) dimulai, dengan menyediakan layanan e-mail, mailing list, dan juga File Transfer Protocol (FTP).
CSNET (Computer Science Network) pun dibangun pada tahun ini oleh para ilmuwan dan pakar pada bidang ilmu komputer dari Purdue University, University of Washington, RAND Corporation, dan BBN, dengan dukungan dari National Science Foundation (NSF). Jaringan ini menyediakan layanan e-mail dan beberapa layanan lainnya kepada para ilmuwan tersebut tanpa harus mengakses ARPANET.
1982 Istilah "Internet" pertama kali digunakan, dan TCP/IP diadopsi sebagai protokol universal untuk jaringan tersebut.
Name server mulai dikembangkan, sehingga mengizinkan para pengguna agar dapat terhubung kepada sebuah host tanpa harus mengetahui jalur pasti menuju host tersebut.
Tahun ini tercatat ada lebih dari 1000 buah host yang tergabung ke Internet.
1986 Diperkenalkan sistem nama domain, yang sekarang dikenal dengan DNS(Domain Name System)yang berfungsi untuk menyeragamkan sistem pemberian nama alamat di jaringan komputer.
Kejadian penting lainnya
Tahun 1972, Roy Tomlinson berhasil menyempurnakan program e-mail yang ia ciptakan setahun yang lalu untuk ARPANET. Program e-mail ini begitu mudah sehingga langsung menjadi populer. Pada tahun yang sama, icon @juga diperkenalkan sebagai lambang penting yang menunjukkan “at” atau “pada”. Tahun 1973, jaringan komputer ARPANET mulai dikembangkan ke luar Amerika Serikat.
Komputer University College di London merupakan komputer pertama yang ada di luar Amerika yang menjadi anggota jaringan Arpanet. Pada tahun yang sama, dua orang ahli komputer yakni Vinton Cerf dan Bob Kahn mempresentasikan sebuah gagasan yang lebih besar, yang menjadi cikal bakal pemikiran internet. Ide ini dipresentasikan untuk pertama kalinya di Universitas Sussex.
Hari bersejarah berikutnya adalah tanggal 26 Maret 1976, ketika Ratu Inggris berhasil mengirimkan e-mail dari Royal Signals and Radar Establishment di Malvern. Setahun kemudian, sudah lebih dari 100 komputer yang bergabung di ARPANET membentuk sebuah jaringan atau network. Pada 1979, Tom Truscott, Jim Ellis dan Steve Bellovin, menciptakan newsgroups pertama yang diberi nama USENET. Tahun 1981 France Telecom menciptakan gebrakan dengan meluncurkan telpon televisi pertama, dimana orang bisa saling menelpon sambil berhubungan dengan video link.
Karena komputer yang membentuk jaringan semakin hari semakin banyak, maka dibutuhkan sebuah protokol resmi yang diakui oleh semua jaringan. Pada tahun 1982 dibentuk Transmission Control Protocol atau TCP dan Internet Protokol atau IP yang kita kenal semua. Sementara itu di Eropa muncul jaringan komputer tandingan yang dikenal dengan Eunet, yang menyediakan jasa jaringan komputer di negara-negara Belanda, Inggris, Denmark dan Swedia. Jaringan Eunet menyediakan jasa e-mail dan newsgroup USENET.
Untuk menyeragamkan alamat di jaringan komputer yang ada, maka pada tahun 1984 diperkenalkan sistem nama domain, yang kini kita kenal dengan DNS atau Domain Name System. Komputer yang tersambung dengan jaringan yang ada sudah melebihi 1000 komputer lebih. Pada 1987 jumlah komputer yang tersambung ke jaringan melonjak 10 kali lipat manjadi 10.000 lebih.
Tahun 1988, Jarko Oikarinen dari Finland menemukan dan sekaligus memperkenalkan IRC atau Internet Relay Chat. Setahun kemudian, jumlah komputer yang saling berhubungan kembali melonjak 10 kali lipat dalam setahun. Tak kurang dari 100.000 komputer kini membentuk sebuah jaringan. Tahun 1990 adalah tahun yang paling bersejarah, ketika Tim Berners Lee menemukan program editor dan browser yang bisa menjelajah antara satu komputer dengan komputer yang lainnya, yang membentuk jaringan itu. Program inilah yang disebut www, atau Worl Wide Web.
Tahun 1992, komputer yang saling tersambung membentuk jaringan sudah melampaui sejuta komputer, dan di tahun yang sama muncul istilah surfing the internet. Tahun 1994, situs internet telah tumbuh menjadi 3000 alamat halaman, dan untuk pertama kalinya virtual-shopping atau e-retail muncul di internet. Dunia langsung berubah. Di tahun yang sama Yahoo! didirikan, yang juga sekaligus kelahiran Netscape Navigator 1.0.
Budaya Internet
Jumlah pengguna Internet yang besar dan semakin berkembang, telah mewujudkan budaya Internet. Internet juga mempunyai pengaruh yang besar atas ilmu, dan pandangan dunia. Dengan hanya berpandukan mesin pencari seperti Google, pengguna di seluruh dunia mempunyai akses Internet yang mudah atas bermacam-macam informasi. Dibanding dengan buku dan perpustakaan, Internet melambangkan penyebaran(decentralization) / pengetahuan (knowledge) informasi dan data secara ekstrim.
Perkembangan Internet juga telah mempengaruhi perkembangan ekonomi. Berbagai transaksi jual beli yang sebelumnya hanya bisa dilakukan dengan cara tatap muka (dan sebagian sangat kecil melalui pos atau telepon), kini sangat mudah dan sering dilakukan melalui Internet. Transaksi melalui Internet ini dikenal dengan nama e-commerce.
Terkait dengan pemerintahan, Internet juga memicu tumbuhnya transparansi pelaksanaan pemerintahan melalui e-government seperti di kabupaten Sragen yang mana ternyata berhasil memberikan peningkatan pemasukan daerah dengan memanfaatkan Internet untuk transparansi pengelolaan dana masyarakat dan pemangkasan jalur birokrasi, sehingga warga di daerah terebut sangat di untungkan demikian para pegawai negeri sipil dapat pula di tingkatkan kesejahterannya karena pemasukan daerah meningkat tajam.
Tata tertib Internet
Sama seperti halnya sebuah komunitas, Internet juga mempunyai tata tertib tertentu, yang dikenal dengan nama Nettiquette atau dalam bahasa Indonesia dikenal dengan istilah netiket.
Untuk di Indonesia selain tata tertib sosial di Internet juga diberlakukan peraturan (UU ITE).
Isu moral dan undang-undang
Terdapat kebimbangan masyarakat tentang Internet yang berpuncak pada beberapa bahan kontroversi di dalamnya. Pelanggaran hak cipta, pornografi, pencurian identitas, dan pernyataan kebencian (hate speech), adalah biasa dan sulit dijaga. Hingga tahun 2007, Indonesia masih belum memiliki Cyberlaw, padahal draft akademis RUU Cyberlaw sudah dibahas sejak tahun 2000 oleh Ditjen Postel dan Deperindag. UU yang masih ada kaitannya dengan teknologi informasi dan telekomunikasi adalah UU Telekomunikasi tahun 1999.
Internet juga disalahkan oleh sebagian orang karena dianggap menjadi sebab kematian. Brandon Vedas meninggal dunia akibat pemakaian narkotik yang melampaui batas dengan semangat dari teman-teman chatting IRCnya. Shawn Woolley bunuh diri karena ketagihan dengan permainan online, Everquest. Brandes ditikam bunuh, dan dimakan oleh Armin Meiwes setelah menjawab iklan dalam Internet.

Anak-anak sedang menggunakan komputer untuk mengakses Internet.
Negara dengan akses Internet yang terbaik termasuk Korea Selatan (50% daripada penduduknya mempunyai akses jalurlebar - Broadband), dan Swedia. Terdapat dua bentuk akses Internet yang umum, yaitu dial-up, dan jalurlebar. Di Indonesia, seperti negara berkembang dimana akses Internet dan penetrasi PC sudah cukup tinggi dengan di dukungnya Internet murah dan netbook murah, hanya saja di Indonesia operator kurang fair dalam menentukan harga dan bahkan ada salah satu operator yang sengaja membuat "perangkap jebakan" agar supaya si pengguna Internet bayar lebih mahal sampai ber juta-juta rupiah!!, lainnya sekitar 42% dari akses Internet melalui fasilitas Public Internet akses seperti warnet , cybercafe, hotspot dll. Tempat umum lainnya yang sering dipakai untuk akses Internet adalah di kampus dan di kantor.
Disamping menggunakan PC (Personal Computer), kita juga dapat mengakses Internet melalui Handphone (HP) menggunakan Fasilitas yang disebut GPRS (General Packet Radio Service). GPRS merupakan salah satu standar komunikasi wireless (nirkabel) yang memiliki kecepatan koneksi 115 kbps dan mendukung aplikasi yang lebih luas (grafis dan multimedia). Teknologi GPRS dapat diakses yang mendukung fasilitas tersebut. Pen-setting-an GPRS pada ponsel Tergantung dari operator (Telkomsel, Indosat, XL, 3) yang digunakan. Biaya akses Internet dihitung melalui besarnya kapasitas (per-kilobite) yang didownload.
Penggunaan Internet di tempat umum
Internet juga semakin banyak digunakan di tempat umum. Beberapa tempat umum yang menyediakan layanan Internet termasuk perpustakaan, dan Internet cafe/warnet (juga disebut Cyber Cafe). Terdapat juga tempat awam yang menyediakan pusat akses Internet, seperti Internet Kiosk, Public access Terminal, dan Telepon web.
Terdapat juga toko-toko yang menyediakan akses wi-fi, seperti Wifi-cafe. Pengguna hanya perlu membawa laptop (notebook), atau PDA, yang mempunyai kemampuan wifi untuk mendapatkan akses Internet.
Kegunaan Internet
Internet mempunyai banyak kegunaan yang menguntungkan dalam berbagai bidang (bisnis, akademis, pemerintahan, organisasi, dsb) antara lain :

1. Informasi yang didapatkan lebih cepat dan murah dengan menggunakan berbagai aplikasi antara lain : email, NewsGroup, www, FTP.

2. Mengurangi biaya kertas dan biaya distribusi, contoh : koran, majalah dan brosur.

3. Sebagai media promosi, contoh : pengenalan dan pemesanan produk.

4. Komunikasi interaktif, meliputi : email, dukungan pelanggan dengan www, video, conferencing, internet relay chat, internet phone.

5. Sebagai alat untuk research dan development.

L'Arc-en-Ciel (ラルクアンシエル, Raruku an Shieru^?, "The Rainbow" in French), often styled as "L'Arc~en~Ciel", is a Japanese rock band, that formed in 1991. The group has sold over 13 million albums, 16 million singles, and millions of other units, such as videos.^[1] They were ranked at number 58, in a list of Top 100 Japanese pops musicians, provided by HMV Japan in 2003.^[2]

History

1991–1996: Early Career

In February 1991, bassist Tetsuya, later band leader, recruited vocalist Hyde along with guitarist Hiro and drummer Pero, and formed a band under the name of L'Arc-en-Ciel. After a year of gaining notoriety in their hometown of Osaka, Hiro left the band on June 12, 1992. Tetsuya convinced his friend Ken to quit his university studies (he was an architecture major at The Nagoya Institute of Technology) and join the band as the guitarist. Pero soon left the band on December 30, 1992. In 1993, a new drummer, Sakura, joined the band.^[2]

On April 1, 1993, the band released their debut album Dune under the indie label Danger Crue. The album was a success and rose to number one on the Oricon indies charts, catching the attention of some major labels. In 1994, L'Arc-en-Ciel signed on with Sony's Ki/oon division, releasing their second album, Tierra that same year. Heavenly followed in 1995. True, released in 1996, became their first number-one, million selling album.^[3]

1997: Sakura's departure

In February 1997, drummer Sakura was arrested for illegal drug possession.^[4] He officially quit the band on October 4, 1997. This proved to be the lowest point in the band's history. When news of Sakura's arrest became public, there was an immediate official response and CDs were removed from the shelves.^[5] "The Fourth Avenue Cafe" for Rurouni Kenshin was immediately replaced with former theme "Heart of the Sword" after only six episodes of running time. Their next single "The Fourth Avenue Cafe" was postponed.^[6] It was eventually released in 2006.

Self-copy band The Zombies

Over the next few months the group continued to be featured in magazines, but only as a trio. "The Zombies", which was notionally recorded as the "copy band", sang their songs.^[7] They also covered Marilyn Manson's "Irresponsible Hate Anthem".^[7] The return from the break was marked by the appropriately named Reincarnation 97 Live in Tokyo Dome, with their new drummer, Yukihiro (former drummer with Zi:Kill and Die in Cries). The first concert in Tokyo Dome had an attendance of 56,000, which sold out in four minutes, a record at that time.^[8]

In 1997, "Niji", the first single after Sakura's departure, was released with Yukihiro listed as a supporting member. Not long after the release of the single, Yukihiro was signed on as the official drummer for L'Arc-en-Ciel.

1998–2000: Blockbuster success in J-pop market

Their 1998 single "Winter Fall", became their first number-one single on the Oricon charts.^[9]^[10] They released the album Heart on February 25, 1998. Ark and Ray were released simultaneously on July 1, 1999, and became the first Japanese albums to be released simultaneously in many other Asian countries. Both topped the Oricon music charts, with Ark occupying number one and Ray at number two. The release of ark and ray marked the commercial high point of the band's career, with each selling over two million copies.^[11]

Their next album Real was released on August 30, 2000. However, it was their last studio album for some time. "Stay Away" from the album Real was featured in DrumMania 4th Mix, making the song playable on the machine.

2001–2003: Hiatus and solo projects

The compilation Clicked Singles Best 13 was released on March 14, 2001. The compilation included twelve songs chosen by fans online in Asia^[12] and an additional thirteenth song, "Anemone".^[13] Their album Real was re-released as Super Audio CD on July 4, 2001. L'Arc-en-Ciel's last new single before their hiatus, "Spirit Dreams Inside: Another Dream", was released on September 5, 2001. Their English language song "Spirit Dreams Inside" was adopted for the closing theme song to the movie Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within.

After "Spirit Dreams Inside", the band went on a hiatus as the members began working on various solo projects. Hyde released two solo albums (Roentgen and 666) and starred in the movie Moon Child with the popular Japanese soloist Gackt. Hyde also played the part of Adam in the movie Kagen no Tsuki (Last Quarter), based on the manga by the same title. Ken founded Sons of All Pussys with L'Arc-en-Ciel's former drummer Sakura. Tetsu started Tetsu69 and Yukihiro sang with Acid Android.

Three compilation albums The Best of L'Arc-en-Ciel 1994–1998, The Best of L'Arc-en-Ciel 1998–2000 and The Best of L'Arc-en-Ciel C/W were released on March 19, 2003. The album series included their almost all singles at that time except "Spirit Dreams Inside -Another Dream-".

2004: Comeback and U.S. concert debut

In June 2003, L'Arc-en-Ciel performed a series of seven concerts in Tokyo called the Shibuya Seven Days, during which they announced a new album for release the following year. The band released "Ready Steady Go" in February 2004, its first single in more than three years. The song was used as an opening for a popular anime series, Fullmetal Alchemist.^[14] It topped Oricon weekly single charts.^[15] A cover of the song is used in a video game for the Nintendo DS called Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan. The single was followed by "Hitomi no Jūnin", in early March. The album, Smile, was released on March 31. Shortly afterwards, on June 2, 2004, the single "Jiyuu e no Shoutai" introduced P'unk-en-Ciel, a partial change, for the first time on CD with "Milky Way".

On July 31, 2004, L'Arc-en-Ciel made their North American concert debut at the anime convention Otakon, held annually in Baltimore, Maryland. Approximately 12,000 people attended the concert, which was held at an outside venue for the first time in Otakon's musical guest history, at 1st Mariner Arena.^[16] They were also the first Japanese act (and until JAM Project in 2008, the only) to perform at the Arena. On May 31, 2005, Tofu Records, Sony Music Japan's U.S. label, released the much-anticipated DVD of the Otakon 2004 concert Live in U.S.A. On June 25, 2007, L'Arc-en-Ciel signed a deal with HMV America.

[edit] 2005–2006: Asia live tour and solo projects

In 2005, the band released various singles, including "Killing Me", "New World", and "Jojōshi". These were later featured on their album, Awake, which was released on June 22 with twelve tracks, including "Lost Heaven", the closing theme of the Fullmetal Alchemist movie. The band's single, "Link", released on July 20, 2005, was also featured in the movie as the opening theme, which was included by their next album Kiss.

In August 2005, the band went on their Awake tour, which was limited to Japan. The tour featured displays of anti-war sentiment, reflecting similar lyrics of the songs of the album. The Japanese Awake tour was followed by the Asia Live 2005 tour, with performances in Seoul and Shanghai, closing with concerts in Japan. Japan's two concerts took place at the Tokyo Dome.

Following the Awake and Asia Live tours, L'Arc-en-Ciel's members turned their attention back to their solo projects. Tetsuya began recording with a new band called Creature Creature. Yukihiro rejoined Acid Android, which released single "Let's Dance" on April 5, 2006. Acid Android joined Mucc, another Japanese rock band, to perform two concerts in Shanghai, China in April 2006.^[17]

Hyde composed "Glamorous Sky", the theme song to the film adaption of the manga Nana starring pop singer Mika Nakashima. It was the first time Hyde composed music for another vocalist. Hyde's latest solo album, Faith, was released in Japan on April 26, 2006, accompanied by a five month tour throughout Japan between April and August 2006. After signing on with Tofu Records, four small concerts were scheduled in San Francisco and Anaheim, California in the United States. Hyde made his U.S. debut in July 2006, the first of L'Arc-en-Ciel's solo projects to extend internationally. On August 23, Ken released a solo single entitled "Speed".^[18]

2006–2009: 15th anniversary and Europe concert debut

On November 25 and 26, 2006, L'Arc-en-Ciel played two shows at the Tokyo Dome to celebrate their 15th anniversary, entitled L'Anniversary. It sold out in two minutes, breaking their former record.^[19] A poll was created on the official website during the weeks before the concert which allowed fans to pick which songs they would like to hear at the event.^[20] The concert was later shown on the WOWOW channel on December 23, 2006. It was also broadcast on February 8, 2007 on Korea MTV.

L'Arc-en-Ciel later recorded the song "Shine" to be used as the opening song for the NHK anime, Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit. They kicked-off their Mata Heart Ni Hi Wo Tsukero 2007 tour in Japan. L'Arc-en-Ciel released the single "Seventh Heaven" on May 30, 2007, which topped the Oricon charts.^[21] The song "My Heart Draws a Dream", used in a Subaru commercial, was released as a single on August 29, 2007, and made the #1 spot on the Oricon charts.^[22] The song "Daybreak's Bell" was used as the first opening theme for the anime Mobile Suit Gundam 00.^[23] It was released as a single on October 10, 2007, topping the Oricon weekly charts as well.^[24] From November 14 to December 25, 2007, there was a limited edition single titled "Hurry Xmas", along with two new DVDs coming out in September and December, titled 15th L'Anniversary Live and Chronicle 3 respectively. Their new studio album Kiss, released on November 21, 2007, debuted at the number-one position on the Oricon charts.^[25]

L'Arc-en-Ciel performed the Theater of Kiss tour, which was held from December 22, 2007 to February 17, 2008. The song "Drink It Down", used as the Japanese opening song for the PS3/Xbox360 game Devil May Cry 4, was released as a single on April 2, 2008, and topped the Oricon weekly charts.^[26] The band went on the Tour 2008 L'7 ~Trans Asia via Paris~ which covered several major Asian cities, as well as Paris, France.^[27] On this tour a definite live show hiatus until 2011 was announced. L'Arc-en-Ciel media continued to be released, a double A-side single, "Nexus 4 / Shine" and a DVD, Tour 2007-2008 Theater of Kiss were released on August 27, 2008. Live in Paris, the DVD of their live concert in Paris, was released on May 20, 2009. Hyde and K.A.Z formed rock duo Vamps and released their first album Vamps on June 10, 2009.

On December 1, 2009, L'Arc-en-Ciel announced a new single, "Bless", to be released on January 27, 2010 and will be used as the theme song to the NHK 2010 Vancouver Olympics. Also, Tetsu announced that he has changed his stage name to tetsuya and released his first artist book, which ranked No.6 among the Talent Book Charts, while featuring early live pictures and a 30,000 character Interview with the bassist.^[28]

P'unk~en~Ciel

P'unk-en-Ciel (パンクアンシエル, panku an shieru^?) is an alter ego of L'Arc-en-Ciel. Introduced in 2004, Hyde takes over guitar, Ken the drums, Yukihiro plays the bass, while Tetsuya performs the vocals. P'unk~en~Ciel's songs have a more punk sound and their music is usually heavier and faster with a different tone due to Tetsuya's vocals. Hyde wears a pirate patch over his left eye in P'unk~en~Ciel performances. Yukihiro is known to wear a gas mask; however, this has only been seen once at a live concert during their Smile tour in 2004.

Each member is called in capital letters Tetsu P'unk (now T.E.Z P’unk), Ken P'unk, Hyde P'unk and Yuki P'unk. Each member produces one song of their choice, and they alternate their productions.

P'unk~en~Ciel is the revision of D'ark~en~Ciel, the former being a special event that took place during the early L'Arc-en-Ciel years when Sakura was the drummer. The only material released from them is the 18-minute B-side "D'ark~en~Ciel" found on the (then) unreleased The Fourth Avenue Cafe single.

Their songs are recorded and used as B-sides on singles from 2004 and their performances can be found as extras on Live DVDs. They also featured television personality Sayaka Aoki with their song "Round and Round 2005".^[29]

Aqua Timez is a Japanese pop and rock band signed to Sony Music Entertainment Japan. The band is well known for their inspirational lyrics and their use of unique musical techniques.

History

Aqua Timez was formed in 2000 after two of the original members, the vocalist and bassist, met on the internet and discovered that they attended the same university. At the time of their formation with all their current members in 2003, the band's name was Aqua Times, the correct spelling of their current name. During this period, the band released a mini-album and a single, but they were self-produced and did not sell many copies.

The band renamed themselves to Aqua Timez in 2005. Their first release under this name was Sora Ippai ni Kanaderu Inori, a mini-album which was released on August 24, 2005 It charted well, peaking at #1 on the Oricon weekly album charts in February 2006.

Alones PV in Shibuya

In 2006, the group signed the major label Sony Music Entertainment Japan and went on to release Nanairo no Rakugaki, their second mini-album with seven songs. Their first single, "Ketsui no Asa Ni", was then used as a song in the movie adaptation of Brave Story. Later in the same year, it was announced that they would provide the theme song to Bleach: Memories of Nobody, the movie version of the anime and manga series Bleach.^[1] The song, "Sen no Yoru wo Koete" (千の夜をこえて^?, lit. "Passing Over a Thousand Nights"), entered the Oricon singles chart at number 5 and went on to sell over 100,000 copies.

Later that year, the band's first full length album, Kaze o Atsumete, was released and reached a peak position of third on the Oricon charts. Since its release, the album has sold over 200,000 copies. "Shiori", their third single, was used in commercials for a brand of soft drink known as Mitsuya Cider and was number 5 on the Oricon charts.

The following year in 2007 the band returned to Bleach. Their fourth single, "Alones", was used as the 6th opening song for the anime and climbed to the #3 spot on the Oricon.^[2]

More recently in 2007, the band produced their 5th single Chiisana Tenohira (#5 on the Oricon), and their second full-length album Dareka no Chijōe was released on November 21.^[3]

Half a year after the release of their last single, they released their 6th single "Niji", which was used as the theme song for Gokusen 3.

On October 1, 2008, their 7th single "Natsu no Kakera" was released.

On January 14, 2009, Aqua Timez released a single called "Velonica", which was used as the 9th opening of Bleach.

On March 4, 2009, they released their 9th single "Stay Gold" followed by their third full album Utai Sarishi Hana on the 11th which has been certified Gold by RIAJ for shipment of 100,000 copies.^[4]

The band released their 10th single "Plumeria: Hana Uta" on 29 July 2009 in which it was used as the theme song for the movie Gokusen.

They have also released a compilation album of their best songs on October 14, 2009. The album contained a newly recorded song called "Saigo Made". This album scored the band's first #1 on the Oricon weekly chart since they signed the major label Sony.

Siam Shade was a five-piece Japanese rock band which was quite popular during their post-breakup period. They broke onto the visual kei scene alongside a multitude of other artists in the early 1990's, enjoying a decade of relative popularity on the Japanese music scene before disbanding in early 2002. Outside Japan, Siam Shade is best known as the band who performed "1/3 no Junjou na Kanjou", one of the many ending themes of Rurouni Kenshin, a popular anime series.

History

The band was formed in 1991 by Natin and Hideki (then known as Chack), 2 high school comrades with an affinity for music. Their aspirations started to become a reality in 1992, when they met guitarist Kazuma at a talent show. After seeing his performance, Hideki and Natin recruited the guitarist into the band, settling on "Siam Shade" as a moniker. Local drummer Ataru, nicknamed "AA", completed the lineup, and the group began touring, playing small clubs and local venues. Shortly afterwards, Hideki called on his former roommate and one-time band member Daita to fill in the lead guitar slot. Siam Shade soon caught the eye of Luna Sea vocalist Ryuichi Kawamura. Impressed with the band's self-titled demo tape and live performances, he expressed interest in touring with the group. The 2 bands embarked on a 3-month tour together at the end of 1993.

Siam Shade underwent a brief lineup change in 1994 when AA left the band and was promptly replaced by Jun-ji, solidifying the group's lineup until their disbandment. Later that year, the band re-released their demo tape to a much wider audience, leaving Japan's indies scene behind en route to major label success. Roughly one year later, the band signed with Sony Music Entertainment Japan and released their second album, Siam Shade II. The album was met with favorable reactions, and the success of the album's two singles, "Rain" and "Time's", helped to solidify the band's presence on the Japanese rock scene. The band became known by virtue of both their virtuosity and song-writing skills, citing Dream Theater and other American rock bands as their primary influences.

The band burst into the mainstream in late 1996 when "1/3 no Junjou na Kanjou", a single from their latest album, Siam Shade IV, was selected for use in the credits of the anime series Rurouni Kenshin. The song's popularity led to increased ticket sales, concert DVDs, and television appearances.

The band continued to release albums and DVDs well into the next decade. In 2002, while touring in support of their recently released compilation albums, the band announced that they would be disbanding in favor of pursuing solo efforts. Siam Shade's 10-year career came to an end on March 11, 2002 in Budokan. Later that month, the band released their final album, Siam Shade X, a compilation of all the band's previous releases.

Siam Shade held a reunion concert titled, "Heart of Rock", on November 18, 2007 at Nippon Budokan, in honor of their manager who passed away the previous April. The band stated that the reunion was a one-off event, and would not pave the way for a new single or album release.
